Today two kinds of tags are commonly used: passive tags and active tags.

| - No internal power source | - Use batteries as a partial or complete source of power |
| - Externally powered and derive their power from the carrier signal radiated from the scanner. | - Two kinds of batteries: replaceable batteries or batteries inside a sealed unit (unitized active tags). |
| - Hold a minimum amount of data and have a shorter “read” range. | Hold more data and have a longer “read” range. |
| - Virtually unlimited life |
