RFID Association Australia

This national peak body is a successful example of collaboration among a broad range of users, solutions providers, researchers, industry associations, educators, and large Australian organisations involved in RFID.

The RFID Association of Australia (RFIDAA) is an independent association supported by the government that aims to create a strong, dynamic and informed Australian RFID market, internationally recognised for its investment and product development opportunities.

RFID Association Australia is working with recent Government initiatives and with leading IT companies in establishing the framework of RFID adoption. The Government has been supporting an Interoperability Strategy since 2002 (read the pdf about the government strategy). and in 2006, the Australian Government also promoted the use of e-commerce between trading partners (pdf).

RFIDAA is also sponsored by Telstra, Unisys, Computer Associates, Booz Allen Hamilton and NEC.

History of RFIDAA:

The Minister for ICT, Marsha Thomson launched a new industry cluster in 2004 to place Victoria at the forefront of the emerging multi billion dollar Radio Frequency Identification technology market.

Established with funding by the Next Wave program, the cluster comprises providers, users and others concerned with the research, development and application of RFID.

In July 2005, the cluster formed the RFID Association of Australia (RFIDAA) to raise awareness within Victorian and Australian industry of the value and appropriateness of RFID. It will facilitate and encourage the use of RFID by businesses to develop, quickly and effectively, RFID applications which can operate in an open, distributed environment and RFIDAA will also provide a national conduit between businesses in Australia and international developments.

RFIDAA will collaborate with ITS Australia in the establishment of the National ITS Centre of Excellence in Port Melbourne where it will showcase Australia’s intelligent transport and RFID capabilities.

RFIDAA has signed an agreement with the RFID Association of India which will enable mutual cooperation and information exchange and is intended to optimise the development and deployment of RFID in these two countries and elsewhere in the Asian region.
