EPC stands for Electronic Product Code. It is a serial (see figure below) created by the Auto-ID Center now-called EPCglobal. The EPC has digits to identify the manufacturer, product category, and individual item.
Since it contains information about a product it is similar to barcode. Yet, unlike a barcode, EPC can identify one box of product from a separate box of the same product thanks to a Unique Object Identification serial number (see figure below). From this particular difference derives a lot of advantages, like helping with monitoring product expiration dates or acting quickly during recalls. EPC also help suppliers and retailers improve their supply chain process so that they have the right products in the right places at the right time.
EPC is part of the data standards that made thrive the RFID technology. As mentionned earlier, RFID is not new, but it’s the adaption of standards like EPC that is new.
